Catalyst centres put a spark into communities

Budding entrepreneurs in some of Leeds' poorest areas are being given the chance to start their own business at low cost, managed work space known as 'catalyst centres'.

The centres target people with a business idea who need a place to develop their idea but can't afford commercial premises of their own. The centres have hot desks, meeting space, computer and office equipment and a full-time 'host' who will be on hand to offer free help and support at every stage of start up. The host will also liaise with other business support networks across the city to help new start up businesses receive tailored advice.

There are two pilot schemes which will be run from East Leeds Family Learning Centre in Seacroft and Hillside Primary School in Beeston. Whilst the buildings are being redeveloped small temporary centres will be set up on site providing a free trial for would-be entrepreneurs.

Incubator space elsewhere in Leeds often has a minimum tie-in period of around three months and businesses are compelled to use the space as they will pay for it whether or not they are using it. Businesses can rent space from the catalyst centres on flexible terms for as often as they want with no tie-in. Space can be rented for as little as one hour a week right up to a full 37 hour week.

In similar space elsewhere in the city business premises could cost an average of approximately £300 per month based on a full 37 hour week with a tie-in period of three months. The catalyst centre rates start from as little £10 per hour and has no tie-in period therefore a new business would only pay for the time that they were using the facilities, making it  amore flexible option for start ups.
